Pros & Cons Of Living In A Dorm

Monday, May 29, 2017

It's almost the end of my first year at college and I just can't believe it. For around eight months I've been living in a dorm room away from my home. It's been quite a big change for me and I want to talk about all the pros and cons of living in a dorm.

PROS
  • Location ~ I have 10 minutes by foot from my dorm to college and I love it. I don't need to worry about traffic or being late.
  • Cheap ~ Living in a dorm is much cheaper than living in a flat. As I'm not able to live at home because I'd need to travel for hour and half back and forth every day it's the best solution.
  • Independence ~ Living in a big city away from home makes you more independent. Some things that my mom or dad would before do instead of me, now I need to do myself. I think that it's amazing practice for the future.
  • Community ~ I'm sharing my room with my sister which is great as we already shared room in our home. Also you pretty much know everyone is a dorm so it's nice.
  • Homey ~ Because of that warm community feeling it makes living in a dorm room very homey. You know that every other girl is in the same situation.

CONS
  • Space ~ My dorm room is pretty small. Especially for two girls. We needed to buy refrigerate as it didn't had one and the furniture is pretty old.
  • Distractions ~  Living in a dorm room with 40 other girls can be pretty noisy. You can easily get distracted by everything going on.
  • Food ~ As we only have one kitchenette it's only appropriate for cooking something really quick. Although we do have canteen near the dorm , food isn't the best all the time.
  • Privacy ~  You don't really have a lot of privacy as you're living with another person in a small room. I do have luck because my roommate is my sister but you still sometimes just want to be alone.
  • Homesick ~ Living five days a week in a big city and tiny dorm room away from your family can sometimes be hard. Especially as I'm countryside girl I like to be surrounded with nature and animals.

After all I really like living in a dorm room. I think that it's the most convenient option for me at the moment. All of the cons can be easily reduced and there are some alternatives that can help living in a dorm room much more appealing.
