How to Protect Skin from Mosquito Bites

Summer is slowly approaching and with them, I can already hear that annoying buzzing in my ear while I'm trying to have a nice day. As someone who loves spending time outdoors but hates dealing with itchy mosquito bites, I've picked up a few tricks over the years to keep those pesky bugs at bay. Mosquitoes can really put a damper on outdoor fun, but with some simple precautions, you can protect your skin and enjoy the great outdoors mosquito-free. Here are my top tips:

1. Use Mosquito Repellent

I honestly didn't use mosquito repellent until last year. It is truthfully one of the most effective ways to ward off mosquitoes. Using a good mosquito repellent is a great investment. I recommend that you look for products containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. To make it effective, apply the repellent to exposed skin before heading outside, and reapply as directed on the label. You can use mosquito-repellent patches

2. Wear Protective Clothing

Sometimes the best way to protect yourself from the annoying mosquitos is to add more pieces of clothing. Although it might seem like something you don't want to do during hot Summer days, covering up is another great way to prevent mosquito bites. Opt for loose, long-sleeved shirts and pants, and choose light-colored clothing as mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors. You can also treat your clothing with permethrin for added protection.

3. Avoid Peak Mosquito Hours

As you probably already know, mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk. If it is possible try to schedule outdoor activities during other times of the day if possible. If you must be outside during peak mosquito hours, take extra precautions by wearing repellent and covering up.

4. Remove Standing Water

Most people don't realize that they are making it possible for mosquitos to lay eggs and with that, bother them during Summer. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so eliminate any sources of standing water around your home. Empty and clean bird baths, flower pots, gutters, and any other containers that collect water regularly.

5. Use Mosquito Nets

When camping or sleeping outdoors, use mosquito nets around beds and sleeping areas to create a physical barrier between you and the bugs. This is especially important in areas where mosquitoes are known carriers of diseases like malaria or Zika virus.

6. Try Natural Repellents

If you prefer a more natural approach, there are several essential oils that mosquitoes dislike, such as citronella, lavender, and peppermint. You can make your own repellent spray using a combination of these oils diluted in water.

7. Keep Your Surroundings Clean

Mosquitoes are attracted to sweat and body odors, so shower regularly and keep your surroundings clean. Avoid using heavily scented lotions or perfumes as these can also attract mosquitoes.

8. Install Screens and Seal Cracks

Keep mosquitoes out of your home by installing screens on windows and doors. Check for any cracks or gaps where mosquitoes could enter and seal them with caulk or weather stripping. In my home, I have mosquito nets on all of the windows. That is a life-changing thing you can do as during hot winter days and nights you can open the windows to allow the cold air in without inviting mosquitoes into your home. I also recommend adding some type of shield to the front door as well.

9. Use Fans Outdoors

Mosquitoes are weak fliers and can be easily blown away by a gentle breeze. Consider using outdoor fans on your patio or porch to create a mosquito-unfriendly environment. If you like to sit outside you can also use Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repellent

10. Treat Bites Promptly

Despite our best efforts, sometimes those sneaky mosquitoes still manage to get a bite in. If you do get bitten, resist the urge to scratch (I know, easier said than done!) and apply calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream to reduce itching and inflammation. 

Although I can't guarantee that you will have no mosquito bites until the end of the Summer, I can guarantee that you will have way less if you incorporate at least some of these tips. By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can significantly reduce your risk of mosquito bites and enjoy your time outdoors without constantly swatting away bugs. Remember, prevention is key when it comes to mosquito control. Stay safe and bite-free out there!
