5 Things to Do on a Rainy Day in London (That Will Make You Forget About the Weather)

Let's be honest, if you're visiting London, there's a good chance you'll encounter rain at some point.

While many travelers dream of sunny walks through the city's parks and famous landmarks, London's weather doesn't always cooperate. The good news? A rainy day doesn't have to ruin your trip. In fact, some of London's best experiences are perfect when the weather turns gray.

During our second day in London, we woke up to heavy rain and quickly realized that standing outside all day wasn't going to be the best plan. Instead of letting the weather dictate our schedule, we adjusted our plans and ended up having one of our favorite days of the trip.

If you're visiting London and the forecast isn't looking great, here are five things I'd recommend doing.

1. Spend a Few Hours Exploring One of London's World-Class Museums

When the rain starts falling, London's museums become your best friend.

One of the biggest advantages of visiting London is that many of its most famous museums are free to enter, making them an excellent option regardless of your budget.

We chose to visit the Natural History Museum, and it quickly became one of the highlights of our trip.

Even before stepping inside, the building itself is worth seeing. The impressive architecture feels more like a historic landmark than a museum.

Inside, you can easily spend several hours exploring exhibits about:

  • Volcanoes and earthquakes
  • Dinosaurs and fossils
  • Earth's history
  • Wildlife and nature
  • Human evolution

My personal favorite was the famous blue whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling of Hintze Hall. Photos don't do it justice. Standing underneath it makes you realize just how enormous these animals actually are.

Other excellent rainy-day museum options include:
  • The British Museum
  • The Science Museum
  • The Victoria and Albert Museum
  • The National Gallery

If the weather isn't cooperating, don't fight it. Take advantage of London's incredible museums and turn a rainy day into a learning experience.

2. Ride the Bus Instead of Walking Everywhere

Many visitors automatically think of the London Underground when getting around the city.

While the Tube is incredibly efficient, I think London's buses are often underrated.

On our rainy day, we decided to use the bus instead of walking long distances, and it completely changed the experience.

Why?

Because a bus ride doubles as a sightseeing tour.

Instead of staring at a tunnel wall underground, you're able to watch the city pass by through the windows while staying warm and dry.

You'll see:

  • Historic buildings
  • Local neighborhoods
  • Famous landmarks
  • Busy London streets
  • Parks and squares

The upper deck of a double-decker bus is especially great for visitors. If you can grab a front-row seat upstairs, you'll get some fantastic views of the city.

It's one of the easiest ways to explore London while avoiding the worst of the weather.

3. Go Coffee Hopping Around the City

Rain and coffee are a perfect combination.

One thing you'll quickly notice in London is that you're never far from a coffee shop.

When the rain started again during our afternoon, we ducked into a Caffè Nero to warm up and take a break from sightseeing.

It reminded me that sometimes travel isn't about constantly checking attractions off a list. Some of the most enjoyable moments come from slowing down and simply watching the city around you.

A rainy day is the perfect excuse to:

  • Try different coffee shops
  • Take a break from walking
  • Recharge your phone and yourself
  • Watch people pass by
  • Plan the rest of your day

London has countless independent cafés, specialty coffee shops, and chains, so you can easily turn coffee hopping into an activity of its own.

Even if you're not a coffee drinker, it's a great opportunity to try something different.

I tried matcha for only the second time during this trip.

I'm still not completely sold on it; it tasted suspiciously similar to spinach soup, but maybe I just haven't found the right café yet.

4. Explore Chinatown and Indoor Food Markets

Rainy weather is the perfect excuse to focus your trip around food.

One of our favorite discoveries was London's Chinatown.

The streets are filled with Asian restaurants, bakeries, dessert shops, and specialty stores. Even in rainy weather, the neighborhood remains lively and full of energy.

If you're visiting, don't be afraid to step into a bakery or try something you've never had before.

Not every food experiment will be a success, I learned that after trying a bun with a filling I wasn't particularly fond of, but that's part of the fun.

If you're looking for even more sheltered options, London's markets are fantastic rainy-day destinations.

Some great choices include:

Borough Market

Perfect for food lovers looking to sample local and international dishes.

Covent Garden Market

A mix of shopping, food, and street performers, much of which can be enjoyed under cover.

Old Spitalfields Market

An excellent spot for food, fashion, gifts, and browsing while staying out of the rain.
Leadenhall Market

One of London's most beautiful historic markets and a great place to explore, even when the weather isn't ideal.

Markets allow you to continue experiencing the city without spending hours exposed to the elements.

5. Slow Down and Enjoy the Atmosphere

This might sound strange, but one of the best things to do on a rainy day in London is simply to slow down.

Many visitors try to pack too much into their itinerary.

They rush between attractions, worry about missing things, and feel frustrated when rain disrupts their plans.

But London is a city that rewards slower travel. Some of my favorite memories weren't major landmarks at all.

They were simple moments:

  • Watching rain fall outside a café window
  • Riding through the city on a double-decker bus
  • Wandering through Chinatown
  • Exploring museum halls
  • Returning to the apartment after a long day and reflecting on everything we'd seen

Rain naturally forces you to move at a different pace, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Sometimes it helps you notice details you would otherwise miss.

Final Thoughts

If you're visiting London and see rain in the forecast, don't panic.

A rainy day can still be one of the best days of your trip.

Instead of focusing on outdoor sightseeing, use the opportunity to experience a different side of the city:

✔ Visit a museum
✔ Take a scenic bus ride
✔ Spend time in cozy cafés
✔ Explore markets and food halls
✔ Slow down and enjoy the atmosphere

London's weather may be unpredictable, but the city offers more than enough indoor experiences to keep you entertained.

In fact, after spending a full rainy day exploring, I can honestly say that some of our favorite memories from London happened when the umbrellas came out.
