I Quit Sugar for 30 Days & This Happened

Wednesday, April 24, 2019

Since I can remember, I’ve always had a sweet tooth. I really love chocolate and all different kinds of sweets more than any other kind of food. That love became even bigger after I started baking for myself. Baking is something that I find very relaxing, and it is one of the ways that I like to let my creativity out. A few months ago, I realized that I was eating too many sweets a day. I know that too much sugar is not good for your overall health, and I knew that I needed to change that. I used to never go more than maybe two days without eating something sweet. So going more than 30 days without sugar was quite a challenge.

I decided to quit any kind of sweetened drinks, desserts, pastries, etc. I only ate fruits because they contain natural sugar and vitamins that my body needs. Although I know that other foods have added sugar in them as well, I tried to avoid as much refined sugar as I could. I actually didn’t find it that hard to avoid sugar, as I just started to be mindful and conscious about it. After I got rid of all the sweets from my place, I just stopped buying them.

For someone who, at some point, ate a chocolate bar a day, I thought that I would have much bigger cravings than I actually had. The first week was a little bit tricky, as I was used to always grabbing something sweet after lunch or as a snack. But after that, I didn’t have any other problems with it. I definitely did see quite a few positive changes that happened after I quit sugar.

MY SKIN GOT BETTER
I am very thankful that I don’t have big problems with my skin in general. I usually don’t get a lot of pimples, although I did notice pimples appearing on certain areas when I would eat a lot of sweets. It would mainly be on my cheeks. I haven’t had a single pimple on my cheek since I started this “challenge”. Another thing that I noticed is that my skin didn’t get as oily as it used to. I didn’t need to put a lot of concealer or foundation to cover anything, which surely helped with that as well. I realized that it is not enough to just take care of my skin from the outside; it is even more important to do so from the inside. If you are struggling with your skin and you also have a sweet tooth, then try to avoid sweets for a little bit to see if it'll help your skin, too.

BETTER MOOD
I used to have a lot of mood swings. I thought that it was just my hormones, but after I stopped eating sweets, I realized that my mood stabilized. I did not look for sweets as emotional support, which is something I used to do a lot. When you eat something with a lot of sugar, you get a quick boost of energy, which then leaves your body, making you feel tired. I haven’t had that at all; my energy level wasn’t oscillating, and I had a much better night's sleep. I was much calmer and didn't stress too much over things that I would usually stress about.

HEALTHIER CHOICES
I started to pay more attention to the food I eat. I drank more unsweetened tea and ate more vegetables. I also drank much more water than I usually did. Since quitting sugar and seeing all the benefits it had on my body and mind, I unconsciously started to be more aware of the things I’m putting in my body and all the effects they have. I slowly built this new habit of mindful eating and listening to what my body is saying to me. I had much more energy for other activities and started to practice Yoga and do cardio.

When I decided to quit sugar, I never had in mind to quit it forever. I just wanted to see how my body and mind would react to stopping consuming it. I realized that I love sweets and chocolate and that I’ll never completely get rid of them from my life, but I do know that I’m going to try and eat any food in moderation. This is mainly because I want to take care of my body and choose the best options for myself.
